Best Peppol invoicing apps for freelancers in 2026
2026 is the year e-invoicing stops being optional. In Belgium, the B2B Peppol obligation has been in force since 1 January; in France, receiving e-invoices becomes mandatory for all businesses on 1 September, with issuing following for small businesses and SMEs in 2027. As a result, choosing the right invoicing app has never been more strategic. Here is our honest comparison of the main solutions for freelancers in Belgium and France, with their real strengths and their limits.
Quick recap: what the law requires in 2026
In Belgium, since 1 January 2026, every VAT-registered business must issue and receive its B2B invoices in a structured format via the Peppol network (EN 16931 standard). A PDF sent by e-mail is no longer enough. Fines can reach €5,000 (Article 70 of the VAT Code). Legal basis: the law of 6 February 2024 and the royal decree of 8 July 2025.
In France, the reform is phased: mandatory receiving for all businesses and issuing for large companies and mid-caps on 1 September 2026; issuing for SMEs, small businesses and micro-entrepreneurs on 1 September 2027. Going through a Plateforme Agréée (PA — French government-accredited platform) is mandatory — 153 platforms were registered as of 14 July 2026. Four new mandatory line items appear on invoices from September 2026, and non-compliant issuing is fined €50 per invoice.
Your app must therefore, at a minimum, be able to talk to Peppol (Belgium) and/or go through a Plateforme Agréée (France).

For the Belgian freelancer who wants free Peppol: Accountable or Billit
If your absolute priority is to be compliant without paying for Peppol, Accountable is unbeatable: free, unlimited sending and receiving on all plans, including the Free version. As a bonus, a real tax module (VAT, income tax) for those who want to reduce their dependence on an accountant. Its limitation: a restricted free version (mobile only, a single bank account, 5 expenses/month) and commercial pressure towards the more expensive “Taxes” plans.
Billit is a solid alternative, with Peppol included at no extra cost and a document-management focus appreciated by SMEs working with an accountant. Downside: its paid plan cannot be billed monthly (quarterly or annually only) and its interface is denser.
For the Belgian sole trader who wants integrated accounting: Dexxter
Dexxter specialises in Belgian sole traders (including student-entrepreneurs) and combines invoicing, expenses and VAT/tax filings, with Peppol included. It has no free version (€20 to €25/month) and remains focused on Belgium, with fewer CRM, calendar or task features. A good choice if tax matters more to you than sales management.
For the French freelancer who invoices from a desk: Indy
Indy is the French leader, with free unlimited invoicing for life and its own Plateforme Agréée status registered with the DGFiP (the French tax administration).
